Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The speculation about the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team might be crafting a faster-paced experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and complex character building—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be completed in diverse methods, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can get ready for more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
