19 of the Russian's 21 championships have been won on hard courts

A resurgent the Russian player secured his first championship for 882 days with a win over opponent Moutet in the competition championship match.

The athlete, a ex- number one, has experienced a challenging period, achieving just one win at the big events and suffering a meltdown at the New York tournament.

Medvedev's unpredictability on the professional circuit - and difficulties with his serving in particular - led to him dropping out of the world's top 10 and finally separating with former trainer Cervara.

Presently working with Johansson and his other coach, Medvedev has gradually improved in the recent weeks - climaxing in a hard-fought three-set triumph over challenger Corentin Moutet.

This marks his maiden trophy since the Italian tournament and maiden on a hard court from March of the previous year.

Success also signifies he has secured twenty-one championships at 21 distinct competitions.

"For the first time I'm at a event with my two daughters together, so to win a title is really nice," commented tennis professional Medvedev.

"This championship is in honour of my child her name, because the first title I achieved when my first daughter Alisa was born was for her."

Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his previous six title deciders, including in Halle in the past months.

His retrieving approach and regular emotional displays on the tennis court had led some to doubt if his capacity to play at the highest level was over.

However the player has made changes in the last few weeks, attempting to come to the net and compete positively, backed up by an improved service.

He recovered from a disadvantage in the initial set against the tricky Moutet, winning four of the final five points to go ahead.

The pair exchanged breaks in the second set before the challenger, bidding for his maiden ATP Tour championship, gained dominance to force a decider.

He rescued four initial chances in a close deciding set before Medvedev broke to 15 to close out the victory.

Appropriately, the winner clinched the title with a shot at the net area, with his opponent unable to handle a return after over two and a half hours.
